WB-BD spat won't affect other aid from Japan, says Muhith

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith Sunday said the complications created with the World Bank (WB) on financing Padma Multi-purpose Bridge would not affect 'any other assistance' coming from Japan.

"Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima has assured me that Japanese assistance for any other projects in the country will not be affected due to WB's recent position on financing Padma Bridge," AMA Muhith told reporters after holding a meeting with Shiro Sadoshima at his Secretariat office.

He said the government was waiting to know about the decision of WB on Padma Bridge financing.

The finance minister said Japan was now reviewing the new alignment of route for the metro rail project in the capital.

He said both Japan and Bangladesh would now undertake efforts to increase bilateral trade and investment, which is now at a low level.

Before the meeting with the Japanese ambassador, Mr Muhith held a discussion with the officials of Power Division at the conference room of the finance ministry to finalise a draft agreement to be signed with India to establish a 1300-megawatt joint-venture coal-based power plant.

The minister said, "Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) and Indian National Thermal Power Company will take the joint-venture initiative for the 1300mw coal-based power plant in the country."
